Chance and mutation – the landscape DOES last forever but is changed by the physical events around it…’machines will come and go – they will destroy and be destroyed. Man may win only to be defeated but the ‘ant maggots’ will clean up the remains ‘…The head erupting from the ‘volcano/carbuncle was going to be me, but I thought that was too egocentric so I changed it at the last minute to Senator John Gorton who later became Prime Minister.
These last two drawings do not let the viewer see what is going on under the crust/earth/womb, this would have to wait for the –‘Fatality’ but more especially
‘This Island Continent Of Man’
paintings that took another 3 to 4 years to come to ‘fruition.’
This was to be the last drawing in this series but another one did follow that raised a little more optimism and retuned a little more humanism to the scene.
