Completed and first exibited in 1980 this painting should be placed flat on the floor and the observer should literally look down on to it rather than at it or for that matter ‘up at it’ – maybe I’m rebellious, but the first time I saw the ‘Sistine Chapel’ ceiling in Rome I thought from that time in 1972 that it would be just as valid to –“paint the floor!” I am told that at the Rotary Exhibition the next year Sir William Dargie or someone who had seen my work before were of the belief that …’the third panel on the right has some of the best painterly skills that I have seen from Francis to date “…….
